From an original character design to game-inspired mashups and everyday reaction images, GrassMoo's rise is a story of continuous evolution.
A furrowed brow. Tired eyes. An expression that somehow blends hurt, resignation, and stubborn resolve. This cow has been showing up everywhere—from chat stickers and short-video comment sections to social media feeds across China. It is GrassMoo, known in Chinese as 草地牛 (Caodiniu), an original character created by Du Chongxiao (杜冲霄), creator of GrassFriends (草地朋友).

GrassMoo's signature expression blends weariness, resignation, and stubborn resolve.
People have dropped GrassMoo into just about every part of daily life: work, exams, overtime, dating, and awkward social situations. They keep rewriting the captions, editing the images, and creating new versions of their own.

A selection of GrassMoo reaction images shared and adapted online.
As its use spread, GrassMoo stopped being just one reaction image and gradually became an online character capable of conveying emotion on its own.
Looking back at how the character took shape and spread, one thing becomes clear: the GrassMoo people recognize today did not suddenly appear in a single online remix. Its evolution followed a fairly distinct path.
First came the original core design. Players then added new visual elements drawn from games, creating a wave of remixes. Wider circulation and continuous user adaptation eventually shaped the form in which GrassMoo became widely recognized online.
The Original Design Came Before the Later Online Remixes
GrassMoo was originally created by Du Chongxiao (杜冲霄), creator of GrassFriends (草地朋友). Based on the copyright information currently available to the public, the character already had a complete original design at an early stage.

Early artwork shows a stable character design before the wider remix wave.
Publicly available copyright registration records list May 21, 2025, as the completion date of the original GrassMoo artwork. That predates the wave of remixes created and circulated by large numbers of gamers and general internet users in the second half of 2025.
In other words, the first appearance of GrassMoo was not one of the later game-inspired mashups that became popular online.
Before the character reached a mass audience, it already had a relatively stable core shape and a recognizable set of facial features.

The original visual identity was already recognizable in early versions.
Those early versions had a limited reach. They circulated mainly as character images and stickers within smaller communities, so they did not yet create the broad public recognition that would come later.

Early character material circulated within a comparatively limited audience.
What truly changed the character's trajectory was the surge of user-created remixes that followed.
Player Remixes Shaped the Widely Recognized Online Version
In the second half of 2025—especially around September—some gamers began reworking the existing GrassMoo design.
They were not creating an entirely new cow from scratch. Instead, they built on the GrassMoo character that already existed and layered new visual elements onto it.

Game imagery and character features were combined in early player-led mashups.
Typical versions circulating online retained GrassMoo's original silhouette and expression while borrowing visual cues from the cows in Story of Seasons. Some also incorporated the eyes, facial details, and relationship-based in-jokes associated with characters from Love and Deepspace. Available records likewise document this period of player-led mashups built around the official design.
The result was a set of highly recognizable hybrid versions.
Put simply, the process looked like this:
GrassMoo's original design + cow imagery from games such as Story of Seasons + selected eye and facial features associated with characters from Love and Deepspace + player-written captions, scenarios, and redesigns
Together, these ingredients produced the GrassMoo remixes that later spread widely through gaming communities.
As the images were reposted and altered again and again, the remixed versions also began shaping how new audiences first encountered GrassMoo.

Different visual styles still preserve GrassMoo's core expression and silhouette.
That is why the GrassMoo widely recognized online today both retains the original character's core visual foundation and incorporates new elements introduced through later player-made remixes.
The Core Visual Features Survived Every Makeover
One reason GrassMoo works so well as remix material is that its visual identity is concentrated in a handful of unmistakable features.
Across the many edits that followed, the background, clothing, pose, wording, and even overall art style could all change. Yet several core traits remained remarkably consistent:
a prominent vertical crease between the brows;
brows and eyes that angle slightly downward toward the center;
a visibly weary gaze;
a curved mouth; and
a rounded, slightly slouchy cow-shaped body.
Existing circulation records also show that although later game-related edits introduced different characters and scenarios, GrassMoo's defining brows, eyes, mouth, and body shape remained intact.

Even across edits, the brows, eyes, mouth, and body shape remain identifiable.
This gives the character an unusual degree of remixability.
Creators can change almost everything around GrassMoo. As long as those few facial features remain, people can usually still tell: this is GrassMoo.
That stable visual identity laid the foundation for the flood of stickers, edited images, and scenario-based content that followed.
GrassMoo Broke Out When It Moved Beyond Gaming
The early gaming-community mashups gave GrassMoo its first noticeable wave of exposure.
But if the character had remained confined to gamers, it might have ended up as little more than an inside joke within a specific gaming community.
What brought GrassMoo to a much broader audience was the rise of everyday remixes with no direct connection to the games themselves.
More and more people began placing GrassMoo in ordinary real-life situations.
For example:
“I don't want to go to work.”
“The meeting starts in five minutes.”
“I didn't study at all for the exam.”
“Working overtime past midnight.”
“I'm already exhausted, and I'm still not done.”
In these situations, users did not need to know anything about Love and Deepspace or Story of Seasons. Nor did they need to know which players had made the earliest remixes.
They only had to see GrassMoo's face to understand the general emotion it was conveying.

Everyday reaction formats helped GrassMoo move beyond gaming communities.
Between September 2025 and April 2026, these slice-of-life remixes increased noticeably. Gaming references gradually faded, while workplace, study, social, and other everyday emotional scenarios became more common.
This changed the nature of GrassMoo's circulation.
The character evolved from an image circulating mainly within gaming communities and requiring specific background knowledge into a standalone symbol people could use to express themselves online.
Why GrassMoo Fits the Mixed Emotions of Young People
GrassMoo's spread does not depend entirely on any single fixed caption.
What people keep returning to is the expression itself.
It does not look simply sad, nor does it look simply angry.
It is closer to a blend of several feelings:
a little hurt;
a little tired;
a little speechless;
yet still not entirely ready to surrender.
That ambiguity—and emotional complexity—is precisely what makes the character work in so many real-life situations.
The same GrassMoo image can appear in a workplace rant, an exam post, a conversation about dating, a chat between friends, or a moment of simple self-deprecation.
The character itself does not have to change. Swap out one caption, and GrassMoo's meaning shifts with the context.

A new caption or pose can shift the same character's meaning with the context.
GrassMoo ultimately spread far beyond its original circles not because every user cared about the gaming references, but because more and more people began using the character to express their own state of mind.
This gave the character room to travel far beyond its original niche.
Why Later Remixes Are Often Mistaken for GrassMoo's Origin
This is a common pattern in internet culture.
The moment a character is first created and the moment most people first encounter it are often two very different points in time.

A later variation of GrassMoo illustrates how the character continued to evolve.
The early original versions of GrassMoo circulated only within a limited range.
By the time the character reached a mass audience, however, various game-inspired mashups were already circulating.
So for people who discovered GrassMoo later, their first encounter may well have been a version that already incorporated visual elements associated with Story of Seasons, Love and Deepspace, or both.
Over time, the version that was first seen by large numbers of people can easily be mistaken for the version that appeared first.
But the timeline that can currently be reconstructed suggests those two things should be kept separate.
Based on the sequence of events that can currently be established, GrassMoo's development unfolded in several fairly distinct stages.
May 21, 2025 — Available copyright registration records indicate that the original GrassMoo artwork had already been completed. This was before gamers and general internet users began participating in remixes on a large scale.
After May 2025 — GrassMoo's original core design and related visual material entered an early circulation phase. Its reach was still limited, and it had not yet gained the public recognition it would later achieve.
Around September 2025 — Some gamers began creating mashups based on the existing GrassMoo design, gradually adding visual cues from the cows in Story of Seasons as well as selected eye and facial features associated with Love and Deepspace characters. These versions first gained traction within specific gaming communities.
Late 2025 to early 2026 — As more general internet users joined in, GrassMoo began appearing in workplace, study, social, and everyday-life scenarios. The gaming references became less prominent, while slice-of-life and emotion-driven content increased significantly.
From 2026 onward — GrassMoo's range of uses expanded further. It gradually became an online character capable of expressing a complex mix of hurt, exhaustion, and resignation on its own. At the same time, content built around GrassMoo began expanding into the multi-character GrassFriends IP.
Seen in full chronological context, GrassMoo was not created overnight by a single game-related mashup. The original core design came first. Players then layered different game elements onto that foundation. Continued remixing and wider circulation gradually shaped the widely recognized online version of GrassMoo seen today.
So the more accurate interpretation is not that a game mashup created GrassMoo. Rather:
GrassMoo began with an original core design. Players later added selected visual elements associated with different games to that design, and those remixes helped propel the character's wider spread online.
From a Single Reaction Image to the GrassFriends IP
As GrassMoo became more recognizable, the content surrounding it began expanding beyond a single reaction image into a more complete cast of characters.
GrassFriends has now publicly introduced several central characters, including GrassMoo, GrassMee, and GrassBoo.

GrassFriends characters GrassBoo, GrassMoo, and GrassMee.
These characters are visibly different in both design and emotional expression; they are not simply alternate versions of the same character.
According to the publicly available character lore, they live in a fictional world known as the Grassland Starfield and are portrayed as close companions.
Compared with traditional animation or comic franchises, however, GrassFriends still has a relatively limited amount of fully developed story material.
Most people still discover GrassMoo through pictures, reaction images, and user-created remixes—not through a long-form narrative.
That gives the character a distinctly internet-native quality:
people use the character first, and only later begin to learn who the character is.
Traditional story-driven franchises often work the other way around: audiences watch the story first, then grow attached to the character and begin using its image.
GrassMoo's Story Is a Continuous Chain of Evolution
GrassMoo's development is not a collection of unrelated events stitched together after the fact.
It is better understood as a continuous process.
The earliest original design established the cow's defining visual identity;
gamers then added visual cues associated with cows from Story of Seasons, selected features associated with Love and Deepspace characters, and other elements of gaming culture;
those mashups circulated within gaming communities;
later, a much wider group of internet users stripped away more of the gaming context and added workplace, study, and everyday-life scenarios; and
ultimately, GrassMoo became a standalone online symbol for expressing emotion.

The expanding range of GrassMoo reactions reflects its internet-native growth.
If GrassMoo's evolution and spread had to be summarized in a single sentence, the most accurate account would be this:
GrassMoo's original core design came first. In the second half of 2025, players built on it by adding visual cues associated with cows from Story of Seasons and selected eye and facial features associated with characters from Love and Deepspace. A much wider group of internet users then continued adapting the character to everyday situations and emotional states, gradually shaping the widely recognized online form in which GrassMoo is used today.
The original artwork supplied the visual foundation.
Player remixes changed and enriched the way the character appeared online.
And widespread public use ultimately determined the emotions and cultural meaning GrassMoo represents today.
That may be the most revealing part of GrassMoo's story—and the reason this internet-native character is worth watching.
